Footballers have Italy trip in sight

SOCCER aces Mark Edwards and Simon Russell will play international football - even though they can't see very well.

Goalkeeper Mark and Simon, who plays in Midfield or defence, won their places after great displays for the South Tyneside Visually Impaired Football Club.

And they will pull on Great Britain jerseys at a tournament in Italy next month.

Mark, 23. was blinded in his right eye after a playground fight 10 years ago. He has only
limited use of his left eye.

Simon, 25. became partially-sighted when he was a teenager.

They will play in the seven-a-side tournament in Rome against Italy, Germany, France and Greece.

Mark, of St Nicholas View, Boldon Colliery, said: "Because of my sight I tried to perfect my Peter Schmeichel technique and spread myself against attacker's."

And South Tyneside Council worker Simon, of Oxford Avenue, South Shields, added: "It was a pleasant surprise to be picked - all my hard work has paid off."

Mark and Simon have played for South Tyneside - one of 14 British clubs for visually
impaired players - since it as formed three years ago.

Team secretary Lee Cawkwell, 26, was delighted with his players' achievements.

Lee who also plays for the team, said: "To have two players in one side picked is quite exceptional. It shows how good they are."

Lee is looking for sponsorship to send Mark and Simon to Italy. Anyone who can help should contact him on 425 1140.
